don't kids read?

So I'm up at a cottage with some friends this weekend. On the way up here, I saw more cars and vans with TV screens in the back (playing either movies or even videogames) than I've ever seen in my life.

Now, when I was younger and took car trips with my family, we'd either talk, play games (having a kid sister is great for this, as it turns out), or read... But adding yet another place to watch TV? Okay, so placating twitchy children is one thing, but a book or two wouldn't kill 'em.

Oh, and on the way up here we passed a sign for "Camp Hillbilly"... Really, I swear.

symbian bluetooth virus... and passports

So I'm waiting at the Passport office today (man that stuff's a pain)... And to make things worse, apparently you can't use your cellphone there. Fine, I'm getting some work done... So I open up my PowerBook.

Within a few minutes, some random Nokia in the room's sending me a Symbian application... To my Mac! Anyway, a quick look inside the binary reveals a few interesting strings... "Virtual SEX engine from Russian hackers!", "Porno images collection with nice viewer", and even "Norton AntiVirus Released now for mobile, install it!"

Ugh. Its now officially mainstream. Nice.

Customer care matters

So I use VeriChat as an IM app on my Treo. It's pretty good and I'm pretty satisfied... But the support is awful. I (and many others) have been waiting for a particular feature for ages. I sent them an email saying this feature was "Coming soon" many months ago, and asking when we'd get it. The response, an infuriatingly trite "Coming soon." Oh, and heaven forbid you find a bug that CRASHES your phone... You'll get no useful bug-fixing effort from them.

Compare this to ChatterEmail... A fantastic email app for the treo, with improvements every few weeks and an amazingly responsive developer who personally responds to bugs, feature requests, etc. Wow, what a difference in customer care.

The VeriChat folks need to fire (hire?) some customer care folks...

Update: Rachel McAdams

... is Canadian and lives (?) in Toronto?... hmm... :-) Okay, back to
work.

Vince Vaughn can sit on my board...

Okay, so I saw The Wedding Crashers yesterday. **Fantastic** movie!
Sweet, somewhat sappy (at times), marginally cheesy (at times),
romantic... but moreover, BRILLIANTLY funny. So the premise is pretty
basic: these two guys (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson) crash weddings
to meet women... and do so under false identities (what a surprise).
So, in the "big crash", they pretend to be two brothers, VC's from
New Hampshire... and all I can say is that as a startup CEO, Vince
Vaughn (or rather, his character) is welcome on my board, any day.

Oh, and as an aside, the stunning Rachel McAdams is worth the price
of admission all by herself. Wow. :)

P.P.S. Any movie with a Will Farrell cameo is also worth a glance :)

Hiring is hard.

Okay, so the costs of hiring the WRONG person are enormous... so it
makes sense to hire well, and spend all the time that's required to
do this... but given that we're hiring for both BD and engineering
roles, it's startling just how much time the process consumes. But
it's a good problem to have, so no complaints from me.

My only irritation? People who should know better... so, we put up a
job posting on LinkedIn (which looks like a very cool service,
especially the reference-checking component) and have received CV's
from some fantastic candidates... but we've also received CV's from
people who are clearly not a fit for the role (i.e. if the last three
jobs on your CV include being a system / network administrator,
applying for a BD/Sales/Marketing role may not be the best idea), and
should know better.

Oh, and while we have a few fav's in the pipeline, if you happen to
know some super smart people looking to work at a great startup,
solving hard problems, and working with great customers, feel free to
let us know. We're looking for :

- BD/Sales/Marketing
- scary-smart developers
- super-scary-smart algorithms guru's, preferably with a solid math &
AI background

LinkedIn... share and share alike...

Okay, so MOST people on LinkedIn (at least in my network), allow
others in their network to browse their connections. This is a GOOD
thing... and results in "oh, I know Fred" or "hey, I should really
talk to Fred" kind of events. Now, there are also people who
(inexplicably, and irritatingly) have this feature turned off. So, I
have a simple request: implement a share-and-share-alike rule... if I
can see your network, you can see mine... simple as that.

Oh, and while we're at it, it'd be great if iTunes let me share my
library ONLY with other people who've got sharing turned on.

LinkedIn... circumvented?

Okay, so what's with people putting their email addresses in their
names in LinkedIn? the purpose of the system is to act as a filter.,
adding *trusted* introductions. le sigh.

Gym time and audiobooks

Okay, so yesterday Leila was talking about how her new trainer's got
her spending an insane amount of time in the gym... and laugh as I
might, i've just noticed (after my swim/bike workout this morning...)
that my Tri schedule's got me working out on average 2 hrs a day...
So, hate them as I might, audiobooks are clearly becoming my best
friend. *shudder* On the upside, all this working out has decreased
my sleep needs a bit more, and i've got more energy. That can't be bad.
